My wife Joyce and I and daughter Leslie operate Rainbow Mountain Outfitting, now in its 18th year of exclusive horse guiding in Tweedsmuir Park. My connections with the country go back to before there was such a thing as a park anywhere. Native Indian on my mother's side, my grandfather, Thomas Squinas hunted, trapped and guided in these mountains all of his life. My other grandfather, Lester Dorsey, one of Anahim Lake's pioneers, established many of the trails and camps we now use.

Our staff is a family team that has been working together for many years with each member bringing skills that make your time with us a truly enjoyable, safe, and memorable experience.

Joyce’s gourmet meals are a hallmark of our trips and a constant source of compliments from our guests, who always marvel at the varied and wholesome menus she manages to bring out of the packboxes and cook over the campfire.

Paul, our guide and packer, has been working with us for fifteen years. His knowledge of the mountains and local history and his enthusiasm for the wilderness never fail to infect everyone around him. He is an experienced and attentive hiking guide who sets a pace that is comfortable for the group.

Leslie and Aileen are our packers, wranglers and guides who have grown up with the outfit and whose skills with horses, packing and guiding will be appreciated by experienced horsemen and provide inspiration to the novice.

We invite you to join us on the trail and around the campfire this summer for a Chilcotin mountain adventure that will put you in another world with memories to last a lifetime.

Share with us the excitement of exploring the next ridge and experience the traditional life style of this historically significant park.

Last year at this time, I began trolling the Internet in search of companies that offer guided tours in Tweedsmuir (South) Provincial Park, located in B.C.'s Chilcotin region, about 480 kilometres north of Vancouver. My interest in Tweedsmuir was piqued several years ago during a road trip between Williams Lake and Bella Coola. In the far distance north of Highway 20, along which I sped, rose an imposing stretch of peaks that glowed in a mosaic of hues. This was the Rainbow Range. I immediately vowed to ridge walk among them someday.

It hardly counts as news that over the past decade the Internet has revolutionized the way many of us make travel plans. All the same, I still marvel at how a few choice words typed into a search engine can yield quick and often voluminous results. My "Rainbow Range" query led me to the site of Tweedsmuir Park Eco Adventures. Within minutes, I'd fired off an inquiry to the Dorseys, an Anahim Lake - based ranching family that has led horsepacking trips into Tweedsmuir for generations.

Truth be known, I'm not big on spending time in the saddle. But my partner is. Thus, I was understandably thrilled to discover that the Dorsey's approach to eco-adventure is to offer both completely outfitted trail rides and horse-assisted hiking. The idea of a horse carrying my backpack while I scamper ahead on foot was instantly appealing.

As Tweedsmuir Park Eco Adventures only offers a handful of Rainbow Range trips each summer, some of which are completely booked by February, it didn't take me long to make a decision. My reward for booking early was twofold: the satisfaction of having time to save up for the trip, coupled with the mounting anticipation I enjoyed in the months before departure. (Not that I couldn't have booked a customized trip with the Dorseys. Like other tour operators interviewed by the Straight, Tweedsmuir Park Eco Adventures is finding that this option is increasingly popular with groups that enjoy adventuring together: families, friends, co-workers, as well as corporate team-building excursions. And groups can be as small as two people.)
